Our Story

Greetings

Hi All.  Glad you stopped by. This is our story about how we decided to start a travel blog.  We are probably a bit different than a lot of the travel bloggers out there.  We are not going to quit our jobs to travel the world but we are going to retire soon (about 5 years) and hope we can travel even more when we retire.

The Beginning

Our story begins with family.  We have always traveled and did all the family stuff; NYC, Boston, DC, Chicago, cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean, etc.  When our boys went to college and we became empty nesters, we started traveling more and added international destinations (besides the Caribbean which is our back yard, we go to the Bahamas for the weekend, its only 60 miles away).    As we traveled more and more often, we were taking more and more pictures and needed a place to put them to share with family and friends. We started loading our travel pics to share with family on Photobucket but it go so ad intensive for non-members it became almost useless.  We played around with Google Sites, but what a pain.

The Idea

When we were looking for an alternative, Ken ran across Matt Karsten’s blog Expert Vegabond. He has a post on his site, How to Start a Travel Blog and decided the next logical step was to just build out a web site for the photo sharing and maybe more.    Ken is a nerd, always have been, since he got his first computer in 1982 when he was 14.  He has held all sorts of jobs in IT over the years and is currently an Enterprise Architect for NASA and Kennedy Space Center.  So, bring it on.  Lets set up a site.

We kept going back to Matt’s site, following Matt and his (now) wife Anna’s blog Anna Everywhere.  At some point, we thought, hey, maybe we have something else to share besides pictures and I started trying to figure out the whole blogging thing in earnest.

Why Us?

We have found ways to travel more for less.  This doesn’t mean economy and/or budget travel, but getting the best bang for the your money, being able to take a 2 week holiday with a traditional 1 week budget.  Or extend a 2 week holiday to 3 weeks or more.

We build our own itineraries and can usually travel for about 50% of what you would pay a tour company or buy buying a package.    We exploit credit card points/miles, determine when to fly, train, or drive, use AirBnB, find hotels with free breakfast, etc. When to use a City Card.  We don’t travel 5 star but don’t travel budget either.  It is really about traveling well and being able to extend your holiday by spending the money more wisely.

As of July 2018, we have traveled, together, to 38 countries, 4 continents (including the holy grail of Antarctica) and 31 USA States.

Now

After looking around for some help, we were once again on Expert Vegabond and found the link to Matt Karsten’s Superstar Blogging Course.   And the rest is history (in the making).

So that’s our story.  We would love to hear what you think.  To learn more check our About Us page.
